I just finished my first week at a new job. I was happy to join the team at United Way of East Central Iowa as the manager of marketing and communications.

So why start this gig after being so deeply invested in The Gazette and KCRG’s mission of becoming the Complete Community Connection?

Let me say first that I’m not leaving the C3 idea behind. I’m still deeply invested in it and believe in it. In fact, every time you build connections that’s all part of C3.

But the United Way position was just too good of an opportunity (professionally, as well as personally) to let pass.

United Way does great things. Heck, I volunteered to be on committees, clean up event venues, and so forth before I ever worked there.

The position (manager of marketing and communications) seemed a good fit and combines many of the skills that I’ve learned though my career.

A quick snapshot of the relevant skills
Newspapers:
Writing, researching

Bank and credit union training:
Video production, scripting, directing

SourceMedia/Eastern Iowa News
Community building, training, public speaking, outside-the-box marketing, brand and people management

After a busy first week I’m glad to be there. I’ve set the wheels in motion to fill the marketing team.

I’ve posted two job openings:
Video editor/photographer
Designer

You can see the full postings at www.corridorcareers.com and www.uweci.org. (If you know anyone who might be qualified feel free to forward the descriptions.)

In Week 1, we’ve had some nice news coverage by KCRG and The Gazette about our quest to recruit 500 volunteers and the campaign kick-off and we’ve done some new things on our Facebook page. (Search for “United Way of East Central Iowa” on Facebook to like it.)

So, after one week it’s been great and I’m looking forward to Week 2.

I know what you mean about changing “gigs”. Why step into something else when where you are is working for you and you believe in it? My opinion…. you see a greater opportunity to expand your passion and with that the lives of others for the better. I design and produce events (lots) and when I can use my passion and talents to serve others and help them hit their goals, their dreams that is awesome! Then I think, WOW I can hook up with other passionate people and their talents to form a unique team to do something awesome for this community and we all become better for it! Now THAT is a life changer for all whom it touches!
